Wuffles (Canon imageRunner 8070)
wuffles is a networked copier. In addition to being
able to print large numbers of pages very quickly and make copies,
wuffles can also staple sets of copies and punch holes
(for a two- or three-hole binder). It can also scan documents and
send them to a machine running Windows or Mac OS X.
Drivers
Mac OS X
Unlike some other printers, where all you need is the PPD file, the iR8070 driver includes several additional preference panes that should be installed to access the full functionality of the program.
Download this disk image (3.1 MB), which has the print driver for Mac OS X.
Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5)
The older driver also works under Leopard. On Intel Macs, you will probably see “crossed out” options in the bottom half of the pane; these are plugins that are PPC only.
You can delete them and the printer will still be configurable. The plugins in question are
EF4C9A24 (PINFO).pluginEF4C9A24 (FJN).pluginEF4C9A24 (CW).plugin
You can find them in /Library/Printers/PPD Plugins.
Windows 2000/XP
The iR8070's PostScript driver is available
in this ZIP file (11 MB). To
install the driver, you should create a new printer using the
standard Windows tool (I would create a new local port, that
points to the printer's network
name, wuffles.math.hmc.edu). When the dialog box
asking you to choose a printer manufacturer and model appears,
click the “Have Disk” button, then navigate to where you've
unpacked the ZIP file and select the oemsetup.ini file in that
directory. From the list of printers in the next dialog, choose
“Canon iR8070-M3 PS Ver 1.0”, then click OK. Change the name to
one of your choosing (wuffles is good, but you can
always do copier if you're boring, or 78u9578y
t[8q if you're kind of wacky). You probably don't want it
to be your default printer, and you almost certainly don't need to
print a test page, but make your own choices. Click OK again,
Windows will copy files, and you're ready to go.
Linux
wuffles is available on the math department's main
print server. Just choose wuffles in xpp or
specify -Pwuffles on the command line.
For you do-it-yourself types, the PPD file will get you started.
Additional Software
The print drivers will get you printing, but to scan you'll need to install the appropriate drivers, available from here.
Mac OS X
Fiery_Remote_Scan.dmg
(9.8 MB) includes the drivers and Java software that you need to use
the copier as a TWAIN scanner.
Windows
Similarly, Network_ScanGear.zip
(8.5 MB), has the TWAIN driver for Windows.
Documentation
The manuals for the copier are available as a ZIP file (38 MB).
Manufacturer's Site
These drivers, as well as additional software, are available from Canon's downloads page.
The Name...
wuffles is named after the small, aged dog belonging
to Lord Havelock Vetinari, Ankh-Morpork's Patrician. Wuffles
appears in Sourcery and again, more forcefully,
in The Truth.
wuffles replaces fluffy, an imageRunner
5000 named after Hagrid's terrifying three-headed dog
in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone,
continuing our tradition of inane printer names.
