| The ODE Architect CD-ROM has been named "One of the nine
best digital projects on the planet" by "New Media" magazine in its December
1998 issue. ODE Architect was one of 1,080 entries in 40 categories submitted
to the New Media INVISION 98 Awards and one of only nine given an Award
of Excellence. Architect also won a gold medal in the category of Higher
Education.
"The New Media INVISION Awards represent the very best digital work produced today in the world," said INVISION director Hal Josephson. "This year, with creative and technical boundaries pushed further than ever and a record number of entries, the competition for INVISION awards was especially strong." The creation of ODE Architect was made possible by several large grants over a four-year period from the National Science Foundation to the Consortium on Ordinary Differential Equation Experiments (CODEE), headquartered at HMC. The project was directed by Robert Borrelli, professor of mathematics and director of the Mathematics Clinic, and Courtney Coleman, professor of mathematics emeritus. CODEE involves 15 mathematicians from eight colleges and universities around the nation. ODE Architect is the result of a collaboration between CODEE, Intellipro software, and the publishers John Wiley and Sons. Architect will be distributed by John Wiley, with royalties paid to HMC to provide continuing support to CODEE. "It was obvious that great minds had come together to make ODE Architect," said Anne Marie Buddrus, a judge for the New Media award. "It's like a math brain trust that has been bottled." The company that developed the CD is Intellipro; the publisher of the accompanying textbook is John Wiley & Sons. Other excellence award winners include the X-Files Game,
the HotBot search engine, DroidWorks by George Lucas,
a Mercedes Benz CD-ROM, and Apple Computer's website The Apple Store. The
awards took place at the New Media conference in San Francisco
In November.
