The Short History of Beggars' Banquet

When we began working as the Production Managers of Collage, our editor suggested that we also write a weekly restaurant column, indicating that it was a great way to find some relief from the woes of cafeteria dining and to get some good food at no cost to us.

Of course, Collage never had the resources to pay for our meals. The idea was that if we called ahead to restaurants and promised we would commit a good 700 or so printed words to them in the college newspaper, they would simply hand over two free meals, with all the compliments of the house.

Well, we tried that. Once. It didn't really work out. We found that not only did we know nothing about food, we certainly couldn't jabber on for said 700 words on any single topic. So, we wrote about we wanted, and tried to at least give some flavor the each restaurant we visited. To free ourselves artistically from any biasing or uncomfortable commitments, we decided to pay our own way, and let our visions be seen.

BB had it's debut in the premiere issue of the fall semester of 1992, with a Japanese restaurant called Yagura Ichiban. Since then, we've covered close to forty venues in the Claremont and greater Los Angeles area. And we're coming back again this spring.

Keep in mind that these are all lifted from the newspaper, so chronology is sometimes important, and may easily be lost somewhere in the hypertext cross-over. Unfortunately, the only volume available at this time is spring '93, as you've surely noticed. Rest assured that more is on the way.

And above all, be prepared. What you're about to read may shock you.

Dig in.
