Archiving Your Thesis
Much of the work of archiving your thesis will be done by the thesis coordinator or the department's system administrator, but you need to do some preparatory work to make the process go more smoothly.
What We Archive
We will be archiving your thesis proposal and your final thesis. Archive pages will also include a picture of you; the title and abstract of your thesis; and, eventually, a BibTeX record for your thesis.
If you have additional materials, such as slides from talks, posters, or other interesting stuff that we might want to include, please put it in your web directory, with links to it from the index page.
Note that the version of your thesis that we will archive is one that we will typeset ourselves, so it is very important that you make sure that your thesis typesets on the math systems.
Directories
To help us archive your thesis, please set up the following directories, some of which are optional.
Thesis Source Code
Create a directory at the top level of your home directory called
username-thesis-year, where
username is your math login name and
year is the year that your thesis was
completed. (That is, if you took thesis in fall, 2005, and spring,
2006, and turned the thesis in at the end of that year,
year should be 2006.)
Inside this directory, put all of the files needed to typeset your thesis except for the thesis class and any packages that are installed on the system. If you had to download and install some special LaTeX package to typeset your thesis, do include it.
Do not put any data files, extra images, source code not included in your thesis, or other files or directories in the thesis directory except for the files needed to typeset your thesis.
Thesis Web Site
We will be archiving some version of your thesis web page. In the past, we have archived the actual page that students have created, with some modifications. We will probably be moving towards recording information in a form that will be used to generate a web page in the future.
To make this process easier, please make sure that any materials
you would like to have archived other than your thesis and proposal
are available in the website directory that you created at the
beginning of the year. As a reminder, that directory is
~username/public_html/thesis/.
Data, Code, and Other Materials (Optional)
If you have data, code, or other materials related to your thesis
that you think we should hang on to (in case, for example, you're
planning to work more on the same problem with your advisor or
readers), please place that material in a directory called
username-thesis-data-year, also at
the top level of your home directory and following the same
guidelines as your main thesis directory.
Archiving Your Own Thesis
You may want to burn archives of your files to CD-ROM or DVD-ROM. The department does not supply blank media, but media are available from Huntley, Target, your favorite office supply store, and quite possibly your preferred grocery store.
There's lots more information about burning CD- or DVD-ROMs on the math computing website, including detailed instructions.
