Uncommon Good's Clinic to College Program Be a
Mentor or Tutor with Uncommon Good's Clinic to College program. By
becoming a volunteer, you can join a lot of other 5 C's students who
are making a difference in a kid's life. The children in the mentor
program are between 9 and 13 years of age and they are considered
at-risk because they come from disadvantaged homes. But, they are
children who do well in school and have the potential to go to college
if they just get some additional guidance. It's easy and it's fun! All
you do is spend a minimum of two hours a week sharing a combination of
no and low cost activities that are fun, educational, cultural, or all
three. Tutors spend about 1.5 hours per week helping a child with
homework and providing academic support so they can achieve their
dream of going to college. For more information or to complete a
volunteer application, visit www.uncommongood.org or call (909)
625-2248. Tutoring at LAC Tuesdays and Thursdays 6-10 pm High school kids from around Claremont and Pomona show up at the LAC for tutoring. Anywhere from 2 to 50 students have been known to show up. Dean Chris is in charge of this. Upward Bound needs students to tutor high school students in all
academic subject areas. These students are low-income, generally first in
their family to go on to college. Tutoring happens on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2:15-6:00pm, Saturdays from 8-10:45am. Transportation to high schools is provided, and you can earn work study allocation.
Please call the Upward Bound office at 18123 for more information.
Dates: ongoing through the academic year, program starts 9/8/2007.
Claremont-After School Programs (CLASP) CLASP offers homework help for elementary-school children on Mondays through Thursdays at local affordable apartment complexes and a church. (The program is nonsectarian.) Each of our centers is located within five minutes of the Claremont Colleges by car. Most of the tutors are from the Claremont Colleges, and the rest are from the community. The hours are 4:00-6:00 Monday-Thursday at the apartments and 3:00-5:00 Tuesday/Thursday at the church. You may attend one or more sessions per week, and you may come late if you have a class until 4:00. This spring the orientation for new tutors is Thursday, February 2, 4:30-5:30, at Claremont Village Apartments. (If you cannot come, you can still tutor.) Meet at Broad Center (corner of Twelfth St. and Mills) at Pitzer at 4:15 that day to carpool to the center. The centers are already open, so you are welcome to begin tutoring even before the orientation. I will send you directions and more information, and we will help arrange carpooling for tutors.
