The simple answer to the question “Can I run a
server on math department computers?” is no.
You are not allowed to run any sort of program that supplies a service to other machines—on or off campus—on math department machines. That includes well-known services such as IRC, FTP, HTTP, and peer-to-peer protocols such as Napster, KaZaA, Gnutella, Freenet, and so forth.
If we find servers running under your account, they will be killed and you will be warned. If you continue to run such services, disciplinary action will be taken.
If you have some legitimate need for a service that must be run on a mathematics department server, come talk to the systems administrator about your project.
