Math 136: Complex Variables and Integral Transforms

Homework 1



Read Sections 1 to 5 of Chapter 1, and the summary at the end of Chapter 1, in Complex Analysis, by Saff and Snider, 3rd edition.

Skim Section 1.6 (especially if you haven't done Real Analysis) for basic concepts of planar sets: open and closed sets, domains, neighbourhoods, connectedness, etc.


Do these problems from Saff and Snider:

  • Sec. 1.1, Algebra of Complex Numbers: 8, 19, 20c, 21.
    (Think about: 2, 3, 4, 23, 24, 30, 32.)
  • Sec. 1.2, Absolute Value, Complex Conjugates: 4, 7b, 8, 16.
  • Sec. 1.3, Vectors and Polar Forms: 5d, 7g, 9, 13 (give counterexamples for those statements that are not always true).
  • Sec. 1.4, The Complex Exponential: 1b, 13b.
    (Think about: 3c, 4a.)
