Math 11: Calculus of one real or complex variable

Overview

In this course we hope to study the beautiful, deep and totally awesome subject of calculus. We may pay special attention to topics typically not studied in detail in high school, such as complex numbers, Taylor series, and various methods of proof. Tutors

We encourage you to consult the wonderful tutors for this course, who work in conjunction with the Academic Excellence program. They hold office hours specifically for this course, and are located in the Linde Activities Center.

Textbook

There is no official text for this course. However, you may wish to consult a standard text to supplement your course notes. One example of such is Calculus, by M. Spivak.

Grading

There will be two midterms and twice weekly homework. Each will count for one third of your grade.

Homework

Written homework will be due in class each Tuesday and Friday, and is posted on the link above. No late homework will be accepted. Each student's lowest homework score will be dropped. Please consult the HMC mathematics homework format guidelines for helpful tips on homework submission and formatting.

Exams

The first midterm will be in class on Friday, September 26. The second will be taken home on Wednesday October 15, to be due Friday October 17.

Web based tutorials

There are 13 web based tutorials to be completed by Sept. 26. Their purpose is to provide a calculus refresher. They can be found at http://www.math.hmc.edu/calculus/
